Introduction to Crime
Writing
This workshop is intended to cover the
basics of writing crime fiction: first, distinguishing between
types within the genre (everything from caper novels to murder
mysteries in ancient Rome) and types of heroes (everything from
village spinsters to gay insurance investigators), then covering
where ideas come from, plotting in relation to character, research
and the importance of the setting, and concluding with the most
common weaknesses in crime fiction by beginner writers.
Participants may like to read Garry Disher's
handbook, Writing Fiction (2001 edition) and essay in his crime
story collection, Straight, Bent and Barbara Vine.
