The 2005 Byron Bay Writers Festival

Director’s Report

As Director, each year I aim for the Byron Bay Writers Festival to provide a national forum for unequalled discussion and a stage for writers to share ideas and stories. As well, it is designed to offer an avenue for reflection on the art of writing and its value to us all. The 2005 Byron Bay Writers Festival will be no exception.

In 2005, I am excited to say that the program will not only reflect the depth of Australian writing but will also feature international guests. One of the unique qualities of the Byron Bay Writers Festival is that while you will find some of the biggest and most familiar literary names, alongside them you will be introduced to new and emerging writers of great talent and people with astonishing stories.

In particular, the 2005 Byron Bay Writers Festival addresses moments of great change and significant decisions. It will look at why certain events occur at certain times in history, be they social, political or personal. It will reflect on historical events, outstanding endeavours and recurring themes and how these movements and moments impact on the world, communities or individuals.

This year the program includes satirists and songwriters, playwrights and scriptwriters, poets and prose writers, fiction and non-fiction writers. Among the line up will be those who write about all the preoccupying issues in life: philosophy, travel, spirituality, sex and sport. I promise a program to both challenge and entertain. I look forward to welcoming you to the Festival this year.
